Honda Cub 6V or 12V? C50, C70 & C90 Identification Guide

Buying parts for a Honda C50, C70 or C90? Check the exact model and electrical system first. Some parts differ between 6-volt and 12-volt models, and year alone is not a guarantee of fitment, especially on imports or modified bikes.

Model-year and voltage reference

The C50 identification details below come from our Honda C50 collection information. The C70 and C90 entries are specific product fitment examples, not a complete production-year chart. Overlapping dates are intentional: identify the model variant, not just its registration year.

Model or application Years listed Voltage Identification or fitment notes
C50 1967–1977 6V Round lights, downdraught carburettor, ignition switch in left side-cover.
C50Z 1978–1979 6V Round lights with separate parking light, swan-neck carburettor, ignition switch in left legshield.
C50ZZ 1980–1982 6V Round lights with parking light in headlight, swan-neck carburettor, ignition switch in left legshield.
C50C 1982–1983 12V Round lights, swan-neck carburettor, ignition switch in handlebars.
C50E Cub 1984–2001 12V Square lights, swan-neck carburettor, ignition switch in handlebars.
C50 / C70, listed 2-wire ignition-switch application 1967–1977 6V Confirm the existing switch wiring and mounting before ordering.
C90Z English model, listed battery application 1977–1982 6V Listed battery reference: 6N5.5-1D. This entry does not cover every C90 variant.
C50 / C70 / C90, listed spark-plug application 1983–1995 12V models Our CR7HS plug listing covers these models. This is a plug fitment range, not a universal voltage changeover date.

Check your bike before ordering

  1. Record the frame/model code, engine number, approximate year and original market if known.
  2. Check the voltage marking and part number on the fitted battery, then compare with the correct handbook or wiring diagram. Do not assume a previously fitted battery is correct.
  3. Check markings on existing bulbs and the horn, and compare the wiring, connectors and ignition-switch position. Mixed markings or altered wiring need investigation.
  4. If the bike has an engine swap or voltage conversion, order for the actual fitted equipment, not the registration year. Ask a qualified motorcycle technician to confirm the system if uncertain.

Choosing compatible parts

  • Batteries: Match the confirmed system voltage, battery reference, dimensions, terminal layout and starting arrangement. Our 6V C90Z English-model battery, 6N5.5-1D is listed for 1977–1982. Do not use this fitment for every C90.
  • Ignition switches: Match the model, circuit, number of wires, connector and mounting. Our C50/C70 2-wire ignition switch is listed for 6V models from 1967–1977 and includes two keys. A similar-looking switch is not proof of compatibility.
  • Lights: Check the specified voltage, wattage, bulb base, connector and lamp fitment. Do not choose bulbs by appearance alone.
  • Spark plugs: Choose by the engine's specified plug type, thread, reach and heat range, not battery voltage alone. Our spark plug for 12V C50/C70/C90 is listed as NGK CR7HS for 1983–1995 models; confirm your engine specification.
  • Horns: Match the rated voltage, electrical connection and mounting to your bike.
  • Filters: Voltage is not enough to identify a filter. Match the exact engine, carburettor or airbox, filter dimensions and connections as appropriate.
